Join us Wednesday June 6th for a relaxing yet exciting night of guitar music from Mike Hyland & Paul Musso. The usual Mike Hyland Trio will be transformed for the evening into a guitar duo with the low end being held down by Troy Robey on upright bass. Selections from the great American songbook will be played along with some originals and ‘new’ standards.
Mike Hyland is quickly becoming an in demand jazz and rock guitarist in denver. Playing frequently with his own quartet and trio as well as with the Andy Hackbarth Band. .
During college, Mike had the opportunity to play with various musician in the Denver metro area. His time at CU also afforded him the honor and transformative experience of studying with the legendary educator and guitarist Dale Bruning. Mr. Bruning became a role model, not just as a guitarist but as a human being.
After graduating from CU, Mike moved to Seattle, where he joined the Hal Sherman Big Band and formed the Mike Hyland Quartet. Mike moved back to Colorado and earned a Master’s in Jazz Performance and Pedagogy from CU Boulder. He now lives in Denver where he teaches private guitar lessons at his home studio, Metropolitan State University and the University of Colorado Denver.
Paul Musso, Performance Area Head and Director of the Guitar Program at the University of Colorado Denver has been with CU Denver over fifteen years teaching fretboard theory, commercial guitar styles, applied guitar studies, jazz theory, songwriting, improvisation and mentoring a host of guitar ensembles. Musso is a freelance guitarist and has performed throughout Colorado area with many diverse ensembles including the Colorado Symphony, the Boulder Festival Orchestra, the Aspen Music Festival, and the Westcliff Jazz Festival. He is the author of three Mel Bay books for jazz guitar: Fingerstyle Jazz Guitar/Teaching Your Guitar to Walk, Graded Fingerstyle Jazz Guitar Solos and his most recent release, Developing Jazz Guitar Solos. Paul is a co-author of Mel Bay’s 2000 Jazz Guitar, where Paul shares the bill with greats Johnny Smith, John Abercrombie, Buckey Pizzarelli, George Van Eps, Andy Summers and many others. His most recent publication, Introduction to Music: an Interactive Approach, was released in early 2012.
